What is the Best Diet for Cancer Prevention?

In America, half of all men and one third of all women will have cancer at some point in their lives. One fourth of all deaths in the country are caused by cancer.

One of the big problems with cancer is that the treatments for it are dangerous on their own. Chemotherapy has a host of detrimental effects and in some cases it only extends the lifespan a few months.

The best way to fight cancer is to avoid ever getting it. The three main factors that cause cancer are obesity, a bad diet and insufficient exercise. Many physicians think that we can eliminate cancer today if people get regular exercise and adjust their diets.

Let’s check out the foods that need to be in your diet and the foods you should avoid.

Organic Food

Consuming organic food is recommended because other types of foods may have been exposed to pesticides. Many different type of pesticides are linked to cancer. Make sure to check that your food is labeled as USDA-certified.

Eat Lots of Fruits and Vegetables

Make a habit of eating fruits and vegetables every single day. Many of them contain compounds that fight cancer. Some of the best cancer-fighting foods include berries, brussels sprouts, broccoli, kale, cabbage, tomatoes and any vegetables that are dark green in color. This can reduce the chances of getting colorectal cancer by up to 20%. Carrots fight breast cancer and garlic reduces the chances of getting gastric cancer.

Get Your Fiber

Fiber goes a long way in lowering the risk of cancer. For every 10 grams of fiber you consume on a daily basis, your risk of colon cancer goes down by 10%. Physicians recommend that you shoot for 25 grams of fiber per day. Recommended sources of fiber include grains, fruits and vegetables. Some people use Metamucil each day, which is a simple powder that you put in a drink and consume that is loaded with fiber.

Add Fish to the Menu

Some people avoid fish because certain types seem unhealthy. There are a number of types of fish that can reduce inflammation and reduce the risk of cancer. You should look for fish that are high in omega-3 fatty acids like salmon, sardines and Atlantic mackerel.

Drink Green Tea

Green tea, especially Japanese green tea, is very good for you in a number of ways. In Japan, a country full of people that drink green tea every day, cancer rates are one third of that of America. This is because green tea is full of polyphenols which help to block chemicals that can form tumors.

The Joy of Soy

Soy fights breast cancer. Make sure to use natural forms like edamame or organic tofu. Soy has been shown to produce staggeringly good results in fighting breast cancer and should be part of any cancer-prevention diet.

Load Up on Vitamin D

The more vitamin D in your body, the lower the risk of cancer. You can take a vitamin supplement, but physicians recommend that you try to get it through a natural source like milk, sardines or tuna.

Don’t Eat Red Meat

Nobody wants to hear this, but red meat is linked to cancer in a big way. It is loaded with essential amino acids that help tumors to grow. Averaging just two slices of bacon per day raises your chances of getting cancer by 20%. Beef, pork and lamb need to be consumed in moderation, if at all, to help guarantee that you live a long and healthy life. Add more chicken into your life! Everybody loves chicken.

Go Easy on Grilled and Fried Foods

Food that is grilled, broiled or fried are linked to a slew of cancers. The longer the cooking time and the higher the temperature, the worse it is for you.

Drink in Moderation

Here is another unpopular fact. Alcohol is linked to cancer, particularly liver and colon cancer. Having just one drink per week increases the chance of getting cancer by 25%. Worse, it is the actual alcohol that causes the problem. That means that any type of alcohol, including wine and beer, are a risk factor. Doctors recommend that men should absolutely have no more than two drinks per day. Women should keep it to one.

Avoid Fried Food and Baked Goods

In the last 20 years, there has been an awful lot of conflicting advice on what fats are safe to consume. The consensus in the medical community is that trans fatty acids increase the likelihood of a person getting cancer. You need to limit your intake of baked goods and foods cooked in a deep fryer, or avoid them altogether. Check food labels for hydrogenated oil! That is a secret code word for trans fats.

Beware of Dairy Products

That cow in the field might seem docile, but lurking in her udder is a remorseless cancer distribution center. Too much dairy is indeed linked to cancer. Consuming one cup of cottage cheese per day increases your risk of prostate cancer by 30%.

Drinking two glasses of milk per day makes it 60% likelier that you will get prostate cancer. Calcium supplements are quite dangerous as well. Taking 400 milligrams per day doubles the risk of prostate cancer.

Adjusting your diet isn’t the end of the world. Remember that moderation is the key.
